A Timeless Story for All Ages!
Children naturally are interested in understanding a parent's perspective on the family. Mr. and Mrs. Mallard's search for a safe home for their future family makes a wonderful story for children and parents to explore and understand more about parental love. Although the book has a 4-8 age reading level, younger children enjoy having it read to them (based on the experiences of my four children). The illustrations are terrific and draw the child's interest very easily. Older children like to reread the story because of its comfortable connection to their more youthful years and reinforcement of their sense of being wanted, loved, and belonging. To me, the best part of the book is that the locations are actually easy to find in Boston. So if you live in the Boston area or ever come here, you can also take your children to experience the story. I know my younger daughter thought that her first Swan boat ride in the Public Garden was the ultimate moment in her life...

It's not easy for duck parents to find a safe place to bring up their ducklings, but during a rest stop in Boston's Public Garden, Mr. and Mrs. Mallard think they just might have found the perfect spot--no foxes or turtles in sight, plenty of peanuts from pleasant passers-by, and the benevolent instincts of a kindly police officer to boot. Young readers will love the mother duck's proud, loving protection of her wee webbed ones, and those with fond memories of Boston will enjoy familiar locales, from Beacon Hill to Louisburg Square, and over the Charles River--often from a duck's-eye view. Robert McCloskey, creator of Blueberries for Sal, never fails to elicit happy story-time giggles from youngsters, and his soft, brown-toned, Caldecott-winning illustrations make this gentle world come alive. Quack quack waddle waddle, quack quack waddle waddle
A tip of the hat, one and all, to Mr. Robert McCloskey. The father of the delicately shaded picture book, his stories always contain simple plots and a bundle of warmth. "Make Way For Ducklings" (which battles with "Blueberries For Sal" for the title Best-Known-McCloskey-Story) is one of the author's strongest efforts. Bringing elements of rural and urban life together, it not only tells a great tale but remains timeless in its telling. The story follows Mr. & Mrs. Mallard, a realistically portrayed duck couple. No animals in funny clothes here. The two settle on a small metropolitan island to lay their eggs. Once hatched it's up to Mrs. Mallard and her troop to walk to their new home in the central park with the help of their local police force. In the sixty some odd years since its publication, "Make Way For Ducklings" has remained exactly the same. The closest it comes to dating itself (aside from the stately cars and "lending library") is that Mr. Mallard abandons his...

A McCloskey Classic
Robert McCloskey's classic children's book, Make Way for Ducklings is just as delightful in the year 2002 as it was back when it was first published in 1941. The timeless story of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard and their eight adorable ducklings is still a fun read for children and parents alike. The story begins as the prospective parents search for a new home suitable for raising their young ones. Mrs. Mallard is clearly the expert in this endeavor and Mr. Mallard is quite relieved when she finally settles on a spot that is not too dangerous or noisy for their young family. The couple make themselves quite at home on a little island in the Charles River of Boston, a quiet oasis within the busy city. Soon the ducklings hatch and Mrs. Mallard sets about teaching them all they need to know in order to live in the city. By now they have made good friends with some of their human neighbors, especially Michael, the policeman. When the family makes its first trip into the city, Michael calls...

Product Description

Found feathered in white or other hues, the plumage of ducks is always handsome.

Preferring the water to land, ducks are often found feeding in flocks to avoid predators. Prepared for fair or foul temperatures, these birds keep their feathers well-oiled and waterproofed, wearing an insulating layer of down underneath. This way, they can fulfill their omnivorous diet requirements in any season. To aid in eating, many ducks have specialized bills built with ridges or filters called lamellae. Nesting near the water's edge, ducks like to hide among bushes.

Fun Facts: Only female ducks quack.

Zoological Name: Anas platyrhynchos

Excellent Book for Young Children
Aside from the beautiful art and endearing story, this book makes a great addition to any beginning reader's library simply for its use as a fun learning tool. There are forty-four sounds in the English language, and all forty-four of those sounds can be found in this book. The same can be said about Goodnight Moon. Be sure to give that book your attention, too!November 9-13 is National Young Readers Week!

THIS ONE HAS TO GO ON YOUR MUST HAVE LIST.
There are a number of books in our cannon of children's literature that should be read to or by every child. This is one of those books.I recently purchased another consignment of mixed books and while digging through my almost sight unseen purchase, I came across this old friend and it rang bells instantly! I was able to trip back through time to earlier days, delightful days, and relive this wonderful little story. Long story short...I remember this one from when I was a wee kid.Robert McCloskey won the Caldecott Medal for this one and there are reasons for it. He both created the text and the illustrations here and has blended them perfectly... more about that later. It was first published around 1941 and has gone through several publications since that date. The last one I am aware of is this 1969 one being featured here, but there quite well may be newer ones about.Basically this is the story of two ducks and their adventure of raising a...

My baby loves this book!
This book has it all for babies, tactile and visual fun, great colors, illustrations and textures, surprises under the flaps and variety. I highly recommend it as one of baby's first books.

An interactive smorgasbord for babies and young toddlers!
Matthew Van Fleet's, "Fuzzy Yellow Ducklings" is a twenty-page, touch-and-feel foldout book about shapes, colors, and animals. It measures approximately 7 ½" x 6 ¼" x 1", and is constructed of heavy cardboard with medium-weight cardstock for the pages and flaps. Fortunately, the pages are sealed on ALL three sides, prohibiting toddler renovations. Accentuated by glossy, white backgrounds the watercolor illustrations are expressive, colorful, and entertaining. The text is large, black, and very basic. It begins on the left side of the book, and consists of two-word phrases such as, "Fuzzy Yellow." On the right, is a "fuzzy" yellow CIRCLE, and the word "circle" is printed next to it. The reader lifts the flap, and sees six yellow ducklings incorporated into the texture. Printed to the side, is the word "ducklings."The book continues in the same manner with a "Bumpy" Brown TRAINGLE turning into twelve grumpy toads, a "Furry" Gray SQUARE becomes four koala bears, a...

My daughter loves this book
This is my daughter's favorite book. She is 11 months old and has practically destroyed it in the month that we have had it. She searches the room looking for it and keeps going back to the duckling page to feel the fuzzy part. The way the pages turn from shapes into animals when the flap is lifted is great. It's like a big game of peekaboo.

Move over, Pat the Bunny! Patting the ducklings is only one of the highlights of Matthew Van Fleet's engaging, interactive fold-out book for very young children. Every page contains an animal surprise, from the fuzzy yellow ducklings to bumpy brown frogs, fuzzy gray koalas, and more. Children will enjoy touching the different textures and identifying shapes of the seven creatures that populate the book, but it's only when the fold-up page is fully extended that all is revealed--it's not a pink line at all, but a frog tongue! At the close of the book, the animals come together in a wild revelry of shape and color. Every small child needs a beginning book like this, one where they can guess and guess again, delighting in the all the tactile wonders as well as increasing their skills in shape and color recognition. And, if this one is already on the shelf, Van Fleet's One Yellow Lion and Spotted Yellow Frogs are fun, too. (Baby to preschool) Top to learn more

Make Way for Ducklings
In 1959 I purchased our first copy of "Make Way for Ducklings" for our 2 year old daughter. We were living in Boston and so the drawings were exciting and familiar to her, and the warmth in the Mallard family was a great illustration of family ties. Back home in Australia this has been a favorite amongst all four of my children. Imagine my delight to find that it is still available and so can find its way into more of my grandchildren's hearts. They pore over the illustrations even though they are not in bright colours, and love the detail.

BUY Make Way for Ducklings

Buy Ducklings

I’m sharing the cost of the feed with sis and one bag of feed was free with a buy-one-get-one free coupon Brianne won at a sheep show. That way the ducks could have an endless supply of water to drink and wash their faces in and I wouldn’t have to refill one-gallon water fonts four to five times a day. But, I think the water would be a non-issue if I used an automatic water bowl similar to those used for dogs. I’ll supply the electricity for heating up the water in the scalder and an endless supply of water for rinsing and washing. The gourmet stores charge almost $20 a pound for breast meat and slightly less for thigh and leg combos while the ethnic stores sell frozen packaged duck meat for about $16. I was asked if the ducks I raise will be less expensive than those you can buy in the stores. The water is a big mystery because I don’t use a meter to track it. But, a rough idea of cost for someone thing of raising ducks would be:. $57. Only our local gourmet stores and some ethnic stores carry duck meat. I have also decided that if I raise ducks again I will build a dedicated area that has more space and housing and figure out some way to manage the water splashing so the whole place doesn’t become a muddy mess. In reality the ducks use more water for washing themselves then they do for drinking. Well folks, the countdown is on. This time next week I’ll be packaging up twelve freshly processed ducks for the freezer.

Our goal is to raise awareness for this unnecessary occurrence, and hopefully prevent it, by offering our adorable, adoptable "stuffed" Easter themed animals in place of the live animals that are regularly purchased around this time of year.  100% of the proceeds from our bunnies, and ducklings, and chicks, and even little lambs, goes to build 'Salvatore's Boarding House', so we can house all of the unfortunate, abandoned and homeless animals from all across the United States. Pet stores and Feed stores are even going as far as dyeing these animals pastel colors to attract people to buy them specifically for Easter, treating these helpless, living beings as novelty items.
